For the next month everyone including everyone here at The Film Experience will be fawning all over the twenty thespians lucky enough to be Oscar nominated as well as another few handfuls of people in various races that people will be honoring/discussing/interviewing. But snubs are what has to happen when Oscar goes gaga for the films they go gaga for in multiple categories each year. Quoth the...

This Year's Big Oscar Snub: "Waiting for Superman"... →
The nominees for this year’s Oscar for best documentary are “Restrepo,” “Gas Land,” “Waste Land,” “Inside Job” and “Exit Through the Gift Shop.”
But missing was “Waiting for Superman,” which had perhaps more marketing power and publicity behind it, not to mention the pedigree of David Guggenheim, the Oscar-winning...
should you have children? | brip blap →
What you shouldn’t do is judge other people’s choices. There’s an old saying that has always seemed to me to be the epitome of reasonableness and nightmarish lack of concern for other people: “the world needs ditchdiggers, too.” That’s harsh, but you know what? It’s true. Well, in the same sense, not everyone NEEDS to have kids. Some because they shouldn’t, and – let’s face it – some people...

Scratch almost any Oscar nominee and you’ll find a Sundance film in their present (“Winter’s Bone”! “Blue Valentine!”) or their past (“Inception” director Christopher Nolan, “The Fighter” director David O. Russell). Here’s a rundown of this year’s Oscar nominees that premiered at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival—all of which came to the festival without distribution.
“Winter’s Bone” (U.S....

Fighter Producer Todd Lieberman Chats About His... →
Just as The Fighter was a near-lock to earn Oscar nominations today, it’s a near-lock to win at least one or two statuettes during the Feb. 27 ceremony. If you had predicted this eventuality six years ago when Todd Lieberman and his producing partner David Hoberman first undertook the project — a troubled drama amid a development slate that included Beauty Shop and The Shaggy Dog — the...

Banksy's Oscar Reaction: 'Last Time There Was A... →
Rookie filmmaker Banksy’s Exit Through The Gift Shop, now nominated for best documentary feature Oscar, is causing the ever-elusive street artist to reconsider the concept of awards. “This is a big surprise,” he states of the nomination. “I don’t agree with the concept of award ceremonies, but I’m prepared to make an exception for the ones I’m nominated for. The last time there was a naked...

The Oscar For Best Money Goes To–The Oscars -... →
Since the impact of the Oscar nominations announced this morning is at least as much financial as artistic, here at Forbes we thought it would be interesting to take a look at the financials of the organization overseeing the whole process. It can be reported with confidence that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is really rolling in the dough.

Netflix Impresses Wall Street, Calms Hollywood -... →
On more than one occasion, the Netflix executives also stressed the company’s plans to add additional value to studios rather than undermine their current business model. On the TV side, for instance, Netflix is looking to offer its subscribers complete (and thus older) seasons rather than newer episodes the day of or shortly after the original has aired (a la the Hulu model). “This is in the best...

Sundance & Kickstarter Collaborate to Get... →
Kickstarter has been instrumental in getting scores of film projects off the ground of late — including the first partially Kickstarter-funded film to go to Sundance, The Woods. Now, the fundraising platform is making that use case official with a new collaboration with the Sundance Institute. To kick off this meeting of minds, Kickstarter co-founder Yancey Strickler held a series of workshops at...

Sundance Festival Thrives On More Than Just Money... →
Whenever a strong theme emerges at a festival as sprawling and diverse as Sundance, with selections from around the globe, it can be attributed to the programming (or journalists grasping for a hook). Religion has long played a part in some national cinemas, so it’s no surprise that fundamentalism has a role in the likeable, earnest Iranian lesbian love story, “Circumstance.” But the number of...
TECH SUPPORT: Analyzing the nominees →
So the 83rd Annual Academy Award nominations were finally announced this week, and I did fairly well in handicapping the nominees. Outside of Best Sound Mixing, I never missed more than one nominee in a category. Unfortunately, there were no categories where I scored 100% (apart from Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay). Oh well.
The massive overall tally for “The King’s Speech”...

Oscar Nominations Announced! -- Vulture →
A few minutes ago in Los Angeles, Mo’Nique and AMPAS boss Tom Sherak announced the nominees for the 83rd Academy Awards.
